I went to Corner Cafe yesterday and was able to get in contact with Chris, the owner. He was excited we were doing the logo re-design as a class project and has agreed to come meet with us at 2:00 on Tuesday. I wrote down some of the questions that came up in class Tuesday, but please be prepared with some "interview" type questions that will help you proceed with the logo designs. Apparently part of the reason for the new logo is they are considering opening another location.
Before class on Tuesday:
REQUIRED: Research design from the 1960's and 70's (psychedelic, hippies, beat generation, tie-dye patterns, etc.) The typography from that time period was often hand-drawn and "blobby." Check out the era in the History of Graphic Design book left on the round table in Room 230.
REQUIRED: Go to the Corner Cafe and (I recommend for research but also because its good!) order some food, absorb the atmosphere, look around at what their aesthetic, etc. Notice the repeated us of the sun as a theme. See what else you can find that might give you ideas to work from (patterns, color schemes, etc.)
Ladies (sorry Dustin) I suggest you go to the women's restroom and look at the ceiling. Maybe Dustin can bring back a report on what's on the ceiling of the men's room. ;)
It is CRITICAL that you inform yourself about the subject as much as you can BEFORE having a client interview. You do not want the client to think you are ignorant of the issues they are dealing with, and you do want them to know that you have taken enough interest in their project to have done your homework.
BTW, Corner Cafe has a Facebook page which doesn't have much on it, but there are some good photos of the facade of the restaurant.
