Each of you should have had five potential logos chosen during class critique on Tuesday. For each of these five "ideas" (they are ONLY ideas at this stage, for the most part and in almost every case, need significant further refinement) you should do a MINIMUM of 3-5 subsequent drawings that alter and improve the seed of a design that you have begun. You are now allowed to alter the type to suit your ideas. In many cases, you might try two different typefaces of the same basic idea and see if that changes the result.
Each drawing/idea should generate the next. Do your beginning thinking on paper in pencil, then with a different sheet of tracing paper over it, fill in the shapes with marker, altering as you have new thoughts. Evaluate them and see what is working and what is not, and then do another drawing based on the new idea. Try to work relatively fast and have each successive drawing solve a problem that is presented by the drawing before.
When you work in this way, you should have no trouble at all in generating 10 new ideas for each sketch. When I am really engaged in "the zone" of this process of evolving ideas on paper, it is sometimes hard to make myself stop. Try to find that zone within yourself! It's addicting!
